How can I disable automatic search (Google) when page is not found?

When I enter a URL in the URL field, then I don't want to do a search with a search engine -- I just want that URL. If the URL is incorrect or not found, then I want it to say not found -- I don't want it to "decide" that I really want a Google (or other) search.

How can I get this behavior -- how can I disable the automatic search when a URL is not found?

(This is easy to do in IE. It should be embarrassing when one can get simple, expected behavior more easily from a MS product.)
