When I click on the back button a drop down menu appears and it is driving me crazy. How do I stop it from appearing.

First, try to update to Firefox 13. Update Firefox to the latest release.
Then, try Resetting Firefox. Reset Firefox preferences to troubleshoot and fix problems
That list opens if you click the Back or Forward button for too long.
So you can try to release the mouse button quicker.
