My Firefox shortcut looks fine but when I click on it the page is Bing and the address bar has 'sweetpacks' instead of Firefox. I can't seem to change it or get back to a normal Firefox browser page. What is going on?

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

You can check for pref on the about:config page that refer to sweetpacks.

You can reset these prefs to the default value via the right-click context menu.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Sweetpacks was blocked recently on Firefox. You have bing and may have other software you do not want, as multiple products tend to get bundled together, and you may not always have been too vigilant checking what was installing.

I mention this because some such items may be global installs and in hidden folders, and will not necessarily be fully removed by a Firefox reset. (Slightly related thread /questions/960863 )

Sweetpacks New Tab for FireFox 1. In the address bar, type 'about:config' and then click Enter. 2. You will be notified that you are about to change your settings. Click 'I'll be careful, I promise!' 3. You will see a Search field, type ‘newtab' and then click 'browser.newtab.url'. 4. In the box that will be opened, enter the URL that you want to open in the new tab page instead of Sweetpacks and then click OK.

I discovered if you remove the add-on that gave the BING virus to you, it goes away too. If you know the add-on, also do "about:config" on a page and find what's left of it in there and for each line do right clk and "reset" which will clear it's value box and FF will remove the line, which you can check by refresh of the "about:config" page. It will keep you from the nuclear option of a doing a RESET on FF, keep the extensions and add-ons you already have that are OK. I got my infection from Elite Screen Capture version 2.0.0.2 which does run on FF 22, but not worth those full page BING <iframe> inserts popping up constantly.

I use Avast as my antivirus. It has a BROWSER CLEANUP tool that removes unwanted browser toolbars like Bing, Conduit, Delta..etc....

Hey I just experienced a complete high jack from Bing on all of my web browsers, Firefox included. For me it happened when I finally allowed uTorrent to install an update it had been nagging me to do. It installed a program called "Search Protect" by Conduit which took over all browsers and made itself default in all of them. After all the time spent trying to get it off I figured these details may help someone else out. Apparently the latest DivX update will also install this same problematic program. I found this step by step removal instruction page to be helpful in getting the areas I had not yet thought to tackle: http://malwaretips.com/blogs/conduit-search-removal/ NOTE: I did not use his specific adware/malware cleaners. Just the ones I had already on my computer along with all of the other manual removal steps he guided me through. Computer is now back to normal after much wasted time and effort.
