Just started recently. Every time I open Firefox and then close the opened tab, Firefox does not close but opens a "new" tab. Thus, I have to close the "new" tab. Why? And how do I stop this aggrivation of having to close Firefox "twice" every time??

Is it Normal New tab, or POP-Up tab?

Check this.

I will have a tab open say displaying a PDF image file. When I close this tab with the PDF image file a "New" tab comes up & remains requiring me to manually close this New tab that was not there when I was viewing the PDF image file. Firefox started doing this maybe 2-3 week ago.

Is this with opening the PDF file locally (e.g. Windows Explorer in clicking in a mail) or are you opening this file from a web page?

Both ways: from my hard drive directly or from a Web site. This New tab may happen at other times (cannot rememeber now). But I know it does with PDF files each time.

Note that some conditions can make Firefox open a new tab before deciding what to do with the file (use a plugin or open in a tab or present a download dialog). Firefox may close such a tab automatically in some cases, but this may not be possible with the first tab.
