How can I get Firefox to let me decide where I want a download to go

I just installed Firefox. With IE I could direct my downloads to an external hard drive. Firefox doesn't give me any options and just downloads to the Firefox download file. I save all my downloads and updates to an external drive so in the event of a crash I can reload my computer without using the internet. Is there some way to get Firefox to let me direct these downloads?
