You may be seeing scam messages trying to seduce you to install malware.

You can check in Help > About if you have the latest Firefox 23.0.1 version.

You can find the full version of the latest Firefox 23 release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html Note that some security software can block the stub version of the Firefox installer, preventing you from updating.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Hi Steve, if you've completed the system level clean-up, you probably have some unwanted extensions you need to disable or remove. Try this:

Disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized add-ons on these two tabs:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

If you see one or more links to restart Firefox above a disabled extension, you can click one of those as the last step after reviewing/disabling.

Next, you may want to choose a new home page and default search engine. And also get rid of a user.js file if some external software created one. See:

Have you scanned for malware, with all programs as he suggested?

Which Firefox version are you currently running (Help > About)?

ignore

I didn't know to use this - if you are telling me to ignore it i have said that it keeps getting in my way when i'm trying to work - it won't let me ignore it - sometimes when i click on the hide ad it doesn't go away - if i could have just ignored it i would have but it's not just there - it's a problem.

With ignore is meant that jscher2000 has edited his reply and removed its previous content, so this isn't addressed to your question.

I think what's needed here is for you to tell me if the pop up is from Mozilla - if it is then my McAfee Security Suite is blocking it and maybe that's why it's staying there even though i have the latest version - if it's not from you then i know it's bad and i need to deal with it another way - it's look real and if it is surely i'm not the only one who is getting it.

Hi Steve, sorry for the confusion about my post. What version of Firefox do you have right now? You can check here:

Help > About Firefox

The current release is 23.0.1. If you have that, then any dialogs suggesting an update are incorrect and most likely inducements to install something you do not want.

If you have an earlier version, use the Check for Updates button in that dialog to get the update. In my opinion, this is always the safest method.

As for what is generating a particular pop-up, this can be difficult to describe in words. Could you post a screen shot the next time you see it? This article has tips on that: How do I create a screenshot of my problem?

more options

i have said 2 or 3 times that i have downloaded the current upgrade - it's late - i'll do the screen shot tomorrow

Also - this screen comes up when i first open firefox

Oh my LOTS of malware, scan with ALL programs, LINKS are below.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

As i said - i have the malware and i ran it

Thank you very much - i disabled quite a few and that seemed to take care of it - i will hang on to all the info you gave me just in case

Also uninstall any weird looking programs through the control panel to ensure deletion through all browsers.
