I am using Thunderbird 24.4.0 on a PC running Windows 7. As with others the recent problems with Eudora not recognising SSL certificate means I need a new e-mail client. I have imported my Eudora files, address book and settings into Thunderbird and it looks as if it has done a faithful import, including attachments.

The Eudora e-mails and attachments have been imported into Thunderbird into Local Folder/Eudora Import/Folder. In fact there are multiple folders, each one specific to a company or client.

The import also brought across my Eudora Profiles, which Thunderbird calls Accounts.

The first question is can I merge the Eudora mails from their folder on the Local folder into the Inbox in the accounts, which is how I am used to seeing them (the convers is also possible - can I filter e-mails with an account e-mail into the Eudora import folder - basically I want historic e-mails and future e-mails in the same folder).

I could post a screen shot, but can't see how to do that in this post.

Thanks

There are valid reasons to send customized messages to a group of users. Suppose you have a club and you want to inform each member of the contribution he or she needs to pay. If all members have email, you can send email messages to them. You have the amount due for each member in your database, but obviously you do not want to send one message to everybody saying Deke owes $23.40, Janet owes $20.19, Dave owes $9.45 and so forth. Rather, you want to send a different messages to everyone. Everyone should receive an email message with the amount due specific to himself. So you use a mailing with customized messages. Another valid use of customized mailings is what I sometimes need to do: I maintain a list of sites. People submit their site to my list. When they do this they also need to tell me their email address. Every few months I check for broken links. Once I find them I will email the owners and tell them about it. I could send them a general email message, but if I customize they know exactly which URL is involved. If they have moved their site, they will immediately recognize: "heck, the guy still has my old URL!".

If you plan to send everybody the same message then the standard features of Eudora will do the job for you. Within Eudora you create a nickname and associate all the email addresses that should receive the message with the nickname. Then you create your message and place the nickname behind Bcc:. If you now send the message all the email addresses will be transferred to your SMTP server and it will then start sending the message to all the people on your list. You are done. If you are sending the message and the SMTP complains about a specific email address not being correct (yep, it happens), then the process terminates. All addresses that have been send to the SMTP server so far, will be discarded by the SMTP server. This is important to know, because only when you know this you realize that you need to resend the email addresses. If you do not resend all email addresses the first part of your list will not receive your message.

Yes, you do. The only way to manage a large collection of records is to use a database. If you do not have a database, you are in for a lot of work. Not because Eudora wants to work together with a database program (it does not), but just because you need to manually customize each message you want to send. If you have just a few messages to send, I suggest you use cut and paste.

Thank you, but I must have been unclear on my question.

I am referring to where the e-mails are stored - in Eudora we called these mailboxes. I have to send e-mails from a number of different addresses. In Eudora these are called personalities. Eudora was set up so that any e-mail sent from or recieved to biopro@company1.co.uk would be filtered and saved in the company1.co.uk mailbox. Any emails send or received to biopro@company2.com were filtered and stored in company2.com mailbox etc.

With the import into Thunderbird I now have 2 mailboxes for each account. 1 under a Thunderbird account and 1 under Local Folders>Eudora Imports>Company1 etc.

I want to move the emails from one folder to another so I have historic and future emails stored in a single folder.

Thanks for your detailed answer though.

Regards

BP

Thunderbird can use either a global inbox ( for POP mail accounts) or account specific ones.

It would appear that the transfer has given you account specific inboxes. As that appear to be what you want enough said.

Please make sure your have the View menu (Alt+V) > Folders > All set. It makes following what folders hang of where much easier than the other views while your learning.

Also I personally recommend having the menu bar visible View menu > Toolbars> menu bar It is had to locate features when the menu is hidden.

As for your folders, you can drag them from anywhere to anywhere with your really. The exception being IMAP mail accounts. Folders dragged from IMAP mail accounts deletes the folder and content from the server and conversely dragging a folder in will add it and it's content to the server.)

The bigger the chunk you drag however the greater the risk of something going wrong. So please backup your imported stuff before you start. Undoing a mess from a backup is always easier than starting over. http://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/backups.html

Message filters can move messages anywhere you like, but only run on the inbox without add-ons. Much more on filters here http://kb.mozillazine.org/Filters_%28Thunderbird%29 plus links to usefull add-ons to enhance the native filter capabilities
