How can I stop read emails from being deleted automatically

When I open an email and exit the email seems to disappear not immediately but by the next day its gone. I cannot finnd it in deleted file. How can I stop this taking place or where has Mozzilla put the email. Sometimes de4tails of the email appear for a while at the top of the page but they don't seem to hang around for long. Clearly there is something I don't understand about ther system. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thans Jerard
