I usually use my PC for all my work but when I travel I take & use my laptop. Both use Thunderbird and the same gmail address, Every time I crank up the laptop (infrequently) and go to thunderbird it takes a long time to update and load up the "all mail" folder. Right now there are 10010 messages in my "all mail" folder. Why do I even have this folder and can I keep it's size down or possibly eliminate it on my laptop?

Unsubscribe to the All Mail folder. It is gmails duplicate of everything else in other folders and probably all the messages you thought you deleted. It might be worth your time to log into your account at the gmail site and clean up your account.
