When I click on a .xls file it gives me the option to open or save file. I select open and then I have to click on the browse and find Excel in my programs. I am not able to select the "Do this automatically for files like this from now on" check box.

In Firefox settings/applications there isn't a content type for .xls to set the actions.

I would like to have Firefox default to Excel, when I select "open with".

You can only set an 'automatic' action if the server is sending the file with the correct MIME type for that .xls file. If this choice is not enabled then the server is likely sending the file with a generic file type.
