Can an Option be included under the General>Customize button to keep showing the New Mail Alert until the new mail is actually accessed instead of just 10 sec?

My "senior" friend isn't always at the computer so he may not get new emails as they come in. T-bird is set to open on Startup but it may be just in the "background". At his age he sometimes forgets to look for new email until T-bird opens next day.

there is that box. The toaster I think it is called, but after it leaves there is a new mail icon in the notification area.

As far as I can see the time for the toaster is hard coded at 4 seconds.
