... Only works when I choose google ...

Please try setting your default search engine to Yahoo by following the instructions you were given.

Now to see if it works highlight some random text wor on this support question page, by clicking and dragging so it goes blue. Now right click and see what options you get. It should offer an option to search with Yahoo and that should work.

  • Does that offer to search with Yahoo ?
  • and does Yahoo.search for the highlighted text ?
If so it is working as expected.

If you leave Google on Firefox as a search engine Google will only be used if you set it as the default search engine, opt as a one off to search with it, or of course browse to a website that uses Google search.

default search engine is google,
I can change it to say, Yahoo,Bing etc
but if I do this then the search engine is limited to these.

If you use Google to search that is why you get Google pages opening to ask you to agree to their T&C and accept their cookies. If you do not accept thier T&C you probably have to close their page.

It is up to you the choice of Search Engines you may add more if you wish

Can you double-check that your default search engine is not set to Google? This article has the steps: Change your default search settings in Firefox.

If you already have a different default search engine that has nothing to do with Google, can you think of any add-ons that might be sending data to Google as you type?

I suggest testing in Firefox's Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?
