I sync bookmarks between my laptop and desktop by using the Backup and Import options under Organize Bookmarks. Today when I tried to restore, it took a long time and then I got a window saying "unresponsive script". When I closed the window, Firefox closed completely.

I tried several times, with the same result. I even tried backing up the bookmarks to a new file and then restoring back to the same machine from that file, but the same thing happened.

Thank you very much for your help.

PS: If it helps, the message in the window is

Script: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/components/nsPlacesDBFlush.js:244

Are you using a JSON backup or an HTML backup?

Did you try to keep the script running to see if it finishes properly?

Did you bookmark any new sites on the computer lately?
If you have then check the Properties of the new bookmarks to see if they have unusual Unicode or other characters in the name or description

You can also look at Firefox Sync.

Hi cor-el,

I am using JSON -- the one I get from Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Backup.

I tried clicking Continue a few times, but it kept coming back with the same "unresponsive script" message.

I can try to check my recent bookmarks, but it's been a while since I last did a restore, so I'm not sure I'll find them all.

I'll look into Firefox Sync -- it may be the answer long-term, but I liked having a system that was (I thought ;-) under my control ....

Thanks for your help -- any other suggestions will be welcome ....

Well, I finally did find a solution, which was to close Firefox and then:

a) Locate my Firefox profile, which was a folder in C:\Documents and Settings\<myusername>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles (the folder name seems kind of random).

b) Delete the files places.sqlite and places.sqlite-journal from that folder (yes, of course I backed them up first ;-)

c) Find the bookmarkbackups folder below the profile folder and:

1) Delete all the *.json files in that folder (did I mention backing them up first? :-)

2) Copy the .json file I was trying to restore from to that folder

d) Restart Firefox

All the bookmarks were magically recreated from that .json file. Since then, I have cleaned them up some and then done another save / restore, and it worked fine, so I guess maybe something was corrupted somewhere.

Hope this helps someone else down the road ... :-)
