Last week I allowed the upgrade to Firefox 8 to install. Since then, typing or pasting URLs into the location bar of a NEW tab always requires two attempts. The first is immediately and silently ignored (the default home page stays displayed, and its file: URL returns to the location bar.) On the second try, Firefox retrieves the page.

If the tab was created by middle-clicking a link, or by a link sent from another application, then the tab will respond to the first manually-entered URL. Only if the tab is created by Control-T or File->New Tab will the first URL be ignored.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
