approx once every few days my bookmarks list reverts to an earlier version so I have to add back any newer bookmarks. But then they disappear again. Also the "recently bookmarked" list reverts to an earlier version and I have to delete entries which again show up later.

Does this correspond only with your computer being restarted ?

You talk about adding back bookmarks. Are you doing that manually by visiting sites and bookmarking them or by some other method  ?

And presumably you do not have Firefox addons that are intended to interact with bookmarks. I presume you are talking about Firefox's internal bookmarks as viewed from the bookmarks manager (aka bookmarks library) use keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+B {Windows). I ask because some Firefox users may make do with external files they keep bookmarks in, Or other applications or websites for tracking webpages.

There is related help article but it may not apply to your situation

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

Places Maintenance {web link} Allows to run Maintenance tasks on the database that drives Places, the bookmarks and history module behind Firefox.
