Firefox crashes when opening Facebook

more options

Firefox started crashing with recent 47.0 update. Has continued with 47.0.1

Tried disabling all addons and also my Comodo Internet Security Premium.

As soon as Facebook loads, FF crashes. Other sites work fine. I can open Facebook in Chrome, so it is not a problem with Facebook or my internet connection.

Here are the some of the last several crash reports:

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

SafeMode-Fx35

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Sorry to hear about the crashes and thank you for the report IDs.

The first four show that Firefox crashed when interacting with guard32.dll, which seems to be part of Comodo.

Could you check whether there are any updates available for Comodo?

Also, I wonder why this is triggered with Facebook. Maybe one of your FB "apps" is doing something suspicious??

The fifth report is a Flash crash. This article has suggestions for Flash crashes: Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again.

I suggest disabling the protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin. That feature has security benefits, but seems to have serious compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it using the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, find "Shockwave Flash" and click the More link. Then uncheck the box for "Enable Adobe Flash protected mode" and try that for a day to see whether it helps.

Thomas - Safe Mode was on for several attempts, and all addons, extensions, & themes were disabled. (I only linked a few of the 15-20 crash reports).

JSCHER - I'll give that a try. Can you elaborate on the "facebook apps" you're referring to. I don't think I've got any apps loading, but how can I check it in another browser?

I rarely use FB, but I believe in the left column there used to be a section that listed different applications from FB and from third parties that are installed on your account.

Still crashing. Disabled all apps that I don't use (or haven't used in weeks). Only apps are ones from reputable sources.

No issues when opening Facebook in Chrome. Is there a way to wind it back to FF 46 or FF 45 (ones that were working fine before this past week)?

I've also noticed that since the FF47.0 update, its mem usage climbs to 300,000 - 500,000 even with only 1 or 2 windows open but no activity on them (for example, if I leave FF open in the background, it would slow my system down and eat up memory. I can't say if it still does with 47.0.1 because it was crashing so I switched to Chrome.)

Strange! I had updated it this morning, thinking that Comodo could have something do to with it, but it didn't solve the problem. I forced it to check for updates and it found another one that included changes specifically for FF issues. So far, it seems to be working fine.

Thank you for your help!!!

I am having a similar problem with Firefox 50.1.0. Firefox can load Facebook and I can scroll/read posts click links, etc. But, as soon as I click in a field to post something, Firefox crashes. Oddly, this does not happen when I click in a field to comment on a post.

This didn't start happening until after I had done a refresh of Firefox (by accident) . I am running fewer extensions than I had before the refresh. I tried starting Firefox with extensions off, but the problem persists.

Hi thepipe, since this question was already marked solved, could you start a new question? You can do that using this link:

https://support.mozilla.org/questions/new/desktop/fix-problems

Please scroll down past article and old post suggestions to continue with the form.

If you are getting the Mozilla Crash Reporter form, your Firefox may have logged some data that would help track down the cause of the problem. You can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution. Please check the support article "Firefox crashes - asking for support" for steps to get those crash report IDs from the about:crashes page, and then post some of the recent ones with your question.
