I've already tried disabling and enabling POP, and Thunderbird still won't work with Hotmail.
In addition, the Microsoft Outlook 365 app also doesn't work. The problem started today, as until the 17th of November Thunderbird worked as usual. It might be connected to Microsoft's changing Live Hotmail to Outlook Mail recently, but that wouldn't explain why it doesn't seem to work with Microsoft Outlook either. I've also tried a few different Internet connections (in different locations), switching to IMAP, adding exceptions to the Firewall, cleaning the registry, re-running the setup (primarily to change from live.com addresses to outlook.com addresses) and updating Thunderbird. The error message I get is...
Sending of password for user ------------@hotmail.com did not succeed. Mail server pop-mail.outlook.com responded: Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password. [Error="AuthFailed:LogonDenied-FederatedStsUnreachable-<X-forwarded-for:82.208.53.234><ADFS-Business-582ms>failed logon error - STSFailure - 'All Replies (4)
I think outlook.com is broken.
I'm not sure if that's it. I can access Hotmail from the website just fine. It's Thunderbird and the Outlook app that don't work. Also, I don't have the endless "loading" error.
On the other hand, some of the complaints on the website you linked to do in fact have to do with the Outlook app. I'm less clear on whether my Thunderbird problem is related.
Does anybody know if this is a problem specifically for apps, even when the website works? Thanks.
Going to webmail is simply opening a website in your browser. No specific software is installed or run.
Anything else such as an email application or an "app" is running some specific software on your device. Different interface, different protocols, different servers. Success with webmail is no guarantee that any or all of these other services will work.

One user has reported that creating an alias for a hotmail account on outlook.com helped.
