Using Windows 10 and upgrading from ESR 52.8, the Search Preferences icon under Options seems to have no effect when clicked. All other preferences icons access the available preferences, but both the Search icon and typing about:preferences#search into the address bar have no effect. (Immediate problem: can't change default search engine)

Please check that F-Secure is not causing the issue : SAFE MODE

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

TEST''''is issue still there ?

Note it could be the Profile as 2 versions do not like the same Profile much. So keep that in mind please as another possible solution.

Please uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 60.0.1esr with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

I also see that accessibility is active:

  • C:\Program Files\Diebold\Warsaw\core.exe

Note that you can set the default search engine via the right-click context menu of a oneoff search engines icons in the list that shows at the bottom of the location/address bar drop-down list.

Again refreshing Firefox (as I did after upgrade to 60 ESR) solved the immediate problem of non-response to commands and icons a few days ago. F-Secure does not appear to be the problem. Diebold Warsaw is something I'd like to be rid of, but this particular user can't work without it.

HOWEVER, found today that this install of FF had totally frozen - could not get past the initial request for a password upon start.

Uninstalled FF, deleted program file folders. Reinstalled. Same problem. Went into Task Manager and found multiple (6-7) PIDs of FF - some not responding, some suspended. Started ending tasks of PIDS not responding, which ended FF each time. Restarted, froze again, did same thing repeatedly until FF offered a safe mode or refresh upon restart. Froze attempting Safe Mode, so refreshed on next iteration.

This seems to have solved immediate problem. However, this much overhead for a single upgraded (experimental) ESR user fills me with a sense of dread for a wider deployment.

Hi, you say upgraded which could be the issue as ver 52 is such a different critter than 60. It maybe better to backup the profile and bookmarks just in case :

Then uninstall, delete all Mozilla folders except for the Profile do a fresh install using a full version installer :
