I'm running FF 6.0.2 and the Java plug-in is uninstalled; how do I get it?

I tried to d-load a program. It said I needed Java. I d-loaded Java 3 times from the website, but the program still wouldn't work. With further research, I found I don't have the Java plug-in. It is not even in my list of available plug-ins. To make sure it wasn't a registry problem, I uninstalled Firefox, and installed the most recent version, but Java is still unavailable.
