Fonts suddenly messed up - looks like I'm missing Western font setting...

All of a sudden, my default font is smaller, fainter, and harder to read. Changing it in Tools --> Options --> Content --> Fonts & Colors does nothing.

After researching what the settings should be, everything looks correct, EXCEPT I am missing the "Western" selection in the "Fonts for:" dropdown menu and I am missing the "Western (ISO-8859-1)" selection in the "Default Character Encoding" dropdown menu.

I do still have the Western selection in the View --> Character Encoding dropdown menu. However, it keeps switching itself back to Unicode even if I switch to Western.

I assume this missing Western setting is the cause of my problem. Fonts look fine in IE, so I don't think there is a problem with the fonts on my computer in general.

Advice is appreciated, because whatever font it is defaulting to as a result of the missing Western setting is very grating on the eyes.

hi, this is probably caused by microsoft update kb3013455 which can cause font rendering issues on vista:

After you install security update 3013455, you may notice some text quality degradation in certain scenarios. The problem only occurs on systems that are running Windows Vista SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP2. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

one option may be to roll-back this particular update for now until there is a fix by microsoft or you could also look if there is a graphics driver update available on the website of the vendor (intel/amd/nvidia) which might also resolve this problem in some cases.

That was it exactly, thanks! I don't know why I didn't think to check that, since I always seem to have to rollback something whenever Windows Update runs...
