Why am I receiving over 1000 emails saying 'undelivered mail' from a Japanese spam account?
I'd selected the first email like this as 'junk' but this has not stopped hundreds of these emails going into the domain emily@communicareinsouthampton.org.uk I've now added a message filter to try and stop them. It does concern me that this has happened though - I've attached a screen shot for your reference. Do you know why there are literally over a thousand 'Mail Not Delivered' messages? Surely this only happens when something is sent out of the said mailbox? Bare in mind I've checked and nothing amiss has been sent from the mailbox mentioned.

A spammer is using your address for the return address of the junk they send. It has nothing to do with Thunderbird.
FYI: The spammers get your address when you post it to a public forum like you just did here. Be more protective of your personal info.

Agree with Airmail in all points.
The emails you are getting are not spam. They are messages sent by the server. It has alerted you to the fact that someone is abusing your email address to send emails. Because the emails went to email addresses that possibly do not exist, the server replied to the email address that allegedly sent them; your email address. In time they will stop doing it as they hopefully will not get any response. The only thing you have to watch out for is if your email address gets flagged by the server (or someone who actually received an email) as 'sending spam'.
