Text shortcuts programmed into my Mac don't work in Firefox

On my Mac, I've added a bunch of text shortcuts (via System Preferences / Keyboard / Text option) so that, for example, typing "001" (part of my email address) inserts my full email address. That shortcut works in most apps and programs, but doesn't work in Firefox. I saw another user had this problem, but his/her question was archived with no solution. I'd be a little surprised if Firefox had gotten into its 89th (?) iteration without this problem being addressed. To be clear, I'm NOT looking for form-fill options. I simply want to use a few keystrokes for a longer text string whenever I choose (for ex., in a Comment field on a website page), not just when filling in forms. Anyone?

You can look at this extension for a possible workaround.
