Receive error "Unable to Login at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password" when attempting to add an email address. Currently have operational (over many months) email addresses from Hotmail (default), gmail, comcast and outlook. The problem email is another from Hotmail, (I'll call it hotmail-2).

So I have two functional hotmail accounts to compare with, the default hotmail (I'll call it hotmail-D) email and the outlook email. When setting up hotmail-2 under the "Set Up Your Existing Email Address" dialogue box it will pass the Re-Test button. Press the Done button and the error appears. I've matched up setup conditions for all three and hotmail-2 still does not add. This includes removing email and data for hotmail-2 and re-adding.

Things I've tried: - Confirmed the login and password on the web - Compared setup information between outlook and hotmail-D. - Compared server settings (Forced the addition through Advanced Config)

All emails work with the desktop outlook on outlook on my phone. I've looked at other responses to this issue but haven't found a solution. Would really appreciate help on this issue. -Ron

Does the non-working account have two-step verification? If it's a POP account, is POP access enabled?

Thank you for the replay: This is a iMap account. Server Settings Type: IMAP Mail Server Name: outlook.office365.com Username: myemail Port: 993 Security Connection: SSL/TLS Authentication Method: normal password Outgoing mail server: smtp.office.com Port: 587 Username: default email Auth. method: Normal password Connection security: STARTTLS

This is the exact setting for another hotmail account and an outlook account. Both these are fully functional. Hopes this helps. -R

The settings are correct, but is 2-step verification set on the account?

I'm familiar with the two step verification. Don't recall ever setting it up on a hotmail account. Checked Microsoft and it appears that emails (Hotmail, outlook) don't have 2-step verification available. This is real puzzle for me. Everything i check appears to be ok. I mean I have two other accounts, @hotmail.com and @outlook.com that are set up exactly the same. When the other hotmail account is added, via wizard (tried manually with the same result). Just stumped.. -Ron

Two-step verification is available on my Hotmail account. The settings are accessed by logging into the account manager from the outlook.com webmail site (account.live.com). If for some reason 2SV is on for the account, you would need to use an app password in TB instead of the account password, which would explain the error.

so where do we get the "app password" in thunderbird ?

EDIT: Got it. You need to go to microsoft account -> Security -> Advanced security option -> App passwords
