Both my wife and my computers receive this message [ Sending of the message failed. The Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.cox.net does not seem to support encrypted passwords. If you just set up the account, try changing the 'Authentication method' in 'Account settings | Outgoing server (SMTP)' to 'Normal password'. ] when we try to send email. Occurred with both computers about a week ago. 1) Checked settings: all accounts set for normal password. 2) Checked with Cox (internet provider). Was shown that using web mail that I could send email through smtp.cox.net. 3) Reinstalled Thunderbird. No change. 4) No viruses or problems found by protection software.

Still receiving email on 5 accounts with no problem but we can not send from any of them.

Unsure of where to proceed except switch email software. Ed

Chosen solution

Thunderbird menu: Tools: Account Settings

On the bottom on the left side, select "Outgoing Server (SMTP)"

On the right side, select "smtp.cox.net". Click the "Edit" button on the right.

Change the settings to: Port: 465 Connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication method: Normal password User Name: The first part of your Cox email address, without @cox.net

If that doesn't work, then change the Port number to 587.

5 email accounts on two computers were are set to encrypted password.

Changing them allowed me to sent from all accounts.

Neither of us knew of this setting; so I am at a loss as to how it was set that way.

Server settings under each account (i.e. not under local folders) were always set at Normal password.

email working but mystery unsolved.

Thanks,

 Ed
