See the attached screenshot. the function is mostly useless as-is now.

This is on Firefox 87 Manjaro 21 (Linux)

Default theme is used.

According to https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/8k3sq4/firefox_updated_to_6001_and_the_search_box_is_no/ there's something wrong with userchrome.css in the profile but that file should be patched if that's the case.

Why this hasn't been patched since it's introduction in version 60 is beyond me.

Did you make sure that none of the special settings like "Match Case" are enabled ?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Works for me. see screenshot Have you tried under a different user? How about downloading a different version to a folder and see if it works.
