I received an email from my email people at mail.com saying thunderbird will soon be unable to receive emails, here is the gist of the email. I'd appreciate some advice on what to do, I have looked in the settings and am unsure what to do.

We are contacting you because one or more of your devices or programs uses the TLS 1.0 and/or TLS 1.1 encryption protocols to connect to our mail.com email servers, or is using an unencrypted connection. This involves either access via SMTP (sending emails) or retrieval via POP3/IMAP (receiving emails).

Unfortunately, the TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 encryption protocols are outdated and no longer meet current security standards. To protect your email communications, soon we will no longer allow access to our mail.com servers with these outdated protocols. Unencrypted access will also no longer be possible.

What does this mean for you?

After the protocols have been deactivated, the transfer of emails between your affected device or program and our mail.com servers will no longer work; i.e. no emails will be transmitted to or from your mail.com email account using TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1. Furthermore, unencrypted SMTP/IMAP/POP3 connections will no longer function. In other words, as of Oct. 5, 2022, it will only be possible to connect if TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3 encryption is in place.

The following devices or programs may be affected:

  • Third-party email programs such as Outlook, Thunderbird or pre-installed apps in which you have set up your mail.com email account.

They do a poorly worded announcement. Thunderbird supports TLS 1.2, as well as those older protocols. Their announcement receives a 'F' in my book because they should have done their homework. Your account is safe.

Which means Thunderbird (since Tb 78.0) supports TLS 1.2 at minimum.

I got the same warning (same email provider) this afternoon. Thanks to you guys for the quick responses, and positive feedback. I'm at the current release level, and so hope all will be well, going forward. Are emails to/from T-Bird encrypted by default? That was the other concern raised by MAIL.COM. Sorry if this was answered directly or by inference. I missed it. Cheers. :)

In fact, I am "ALREADY" being limited ON the "MAIL.COM" website, using FIREFOX 104.0.2 to log on.

(The browser they offer is only through Google and Android Apps. Not for a "DESKTOP" version, to note.)


When I am logged in, I am limited to "JUST" the e-mail section.

LUCKILY, I do not use their "CLOUD" or "CALENDAR" or other features, or I would "ALREADY" be blocked out of using such.

They do send a confusing message, for sure. I just went to their site and received message that my Firefox is out of date (it is not) and that I should download the new version (same one I'm using), but I did notice that their version includes an addon that focuses on using their website. I avoided it.

I tried the MAIL.COM add on for a while, but T-Bird does a better job of dealing with them, and the add on kept popping up annoying sign in pages, switching itself to the default search engine, and so on, so I removed it from all of my browsers. If they weren't free and separate from Microsoft and Google, I'd move on to something else.

Some websites may not handle web browsers with version numbers with three characters and may have issues or wrongly claim you are using a outdated or not supported web browser.

Just that "MAIL.COM" has a spam filter that I check daily so to ensure that some of my e-mail that I "REGULARLY" get, at times gets blocked even with my putting it in their "approved" list.

It has worked since Firefox "100" came out, up to about 4 weeks ago. It started showing the 'restricted' notice the same time I got the message via Thunderbird that I am using the outdated "TLS" encryption / security.

I am restricted on Firefox. I hope it won't happen with TB, even with the [so called] ensurance here it should not.
