ask.com installed a search bar when i accidentally accepted it. now, seeing that search engine is pretty much useless, i really want the google.com search bar back but can't work out how to change it back.

Click the arrow next to the ask.com icon on the search bar. Select "manage search engines. Select google and check default.

I guess I should ask if you are referring to the default search bar to the right of the address bar or an actual toolbar that was installed?

For the location bar search you can check the pref keyword.URL on the about:config page.
