thunderbird wont download new messages, displays spinning wheel continuously
last successfully downloaded a new message from gmail about a week ago. now when I start up thunderbird, it just displays a spinning wheel at the top of the window, and never actually downloads any email. no error messages that I could find. I didnt want to lose all my filters and mail folder configurations by redownloading from scratch.

other information: I'm running 24.6.0 version of thunderbird. spinning wheel eventually goes away when I go to offline mode. but starts again when I go online. I have multiple gmail accounts, and all of them are blocked. I can see the messages in a web browser going to gmail. have not made any changes to my gmail accounts or thunderbird to my knowledge. gmail is using about 15% of capacity.
Do you use any anti-virus software which includes a personal firewall?
I do, and it has been turned on well before the issue started occurring. I just turned it off, and it doesnt make any difference.
Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode.

Does the problem go away?
