For some considerable time I have had Firefox set to display my home page when I open a new tab. Today (Oct 5th 2015) I open a new tab and I discover that "New Tab got an Update!" Woohoo. I go to about:config and I see that browser.newtab.url is still set to point to my home page. I can turn the notification off by resetting browser.newtabpage.introShown, in which case I get a bunch of unwanted thumbnails; or I can get a blank page by resetting browser.newtabpage.enabled.

So my question is: how do I go back to how it was yesterday, with new tabs showing my home page?

Also, why do I have to go to about:config to set this up in the first place, rather than having "open this URL when I open a new tab" as one of the options in the tabs preferences dialog?

I used to think Firefox was the best browser in the world, but whenever a new update appears that changes all my pre-set preferences, makes my menu and title bar disappear, and so on, I get really annoyed.

In Firefox 41 that browser.newtab.url pref is gone. That pref was being hijacked by malware so frequently so Mozilla decided to remove that pref to eliminate that type of hijack. You will need an extension such as this to restore it. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

Or for having your homepage as the new tab page, try this extension. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage/

If you are using Classic Theme Restorer, go into CTR options > General UI (2) and set your preference for the new tab URL there.

For Super Start you can use the about:superstart page.

OK, thanks. Done.

I'm still amazed that Firefox doesn't make this a standard option, and you have to install a plugin to get to it, when they go to such efforts to provide all these other clever new tab thingies that I don't actually want.
