yahoo search substandard results
Much as I dislike Google-everything on the Web, just like I dislike Microsoft-everything on my computer, Yahoo search isn't very helpful. I decided to make Google my default search on Firefox for the following reason.
Yahoo, when searched for obscure terms will give me search results that match my search term to a tee, but the results are other search engine results asking the same question. I have found Alot and When, two unknown search engines so far, together with too many returns from Ask, another useless search engine. One Yahoo search led ,e to a Yahoo ad listing by Ask, which in turn led me to When, which in turn led me to Ask ~ closed loop.
Google does on occasion find itself, but I really have to hunt for its self-listing. If I want to find something outside of a Google-owned property, I can use Google Minus Google search. Actually found a university web page that better explained something about a Google service than I find on Google's "help." Search Google for google minus google to find this one.
I did make Google my default for searches in the address bar, but I can select Yahoo in the search bar. I'll give Yahoo a chance on occasion.

For anyone wishing to set the default search to Google, simply open Options and go to the search tab. Select Google, or another choice in the first entry. This will set the default engine for use in the address bar (which Firefox calls the Location Bar), the search bar, and the search fields on the Firefox Start Page and New Tabs pages.
In the window below that, deselect the search engines you want to hide from view as alternate choices for use in the search bar.
Screen shot shows me using the old-style window instead of the default Options tab. I restored that in the about:config page using advice found elsewhere in the knowledge-base.
My second screen shot is of the search bar, in which I am searching for "my search terms here" without quotes, am clicking on the magnifying glass (black mouse pointer) and displaying the current search default and the additional choices I have made available for myself.
By clicking on the magnifying glass to show this list and then clicking on the engine I want to send my search to, I come up with that search engine's results page in the tab I have open.
