Firefox Quantom was crashing repeatedly, then all the time, and now freezes often in safe mode.

At first individual (random) tabs were crashing fairly frequently, but I could continue for a while after each restart. That became more frequent, and then the whole thing crashed almost immediately on restart. I didn't even have long enough to find out how to restart in safe mode, and had to use another browser for that. Safe mode is fine for a while but then freezes (not responding), usually very soon after I come back to Firefox after a break. Then it takes several attempts to close it, and I restart, and restart again in safe mode.

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

Thank you very much for the instructions which I hope I've followed correctly! When I returned to the PC this morning (7 am UK) Firefox had crashed and did again repeatedly before I could even get to safe mode. I used Edge to find how to restart Windows 10 in safe mode, and made a note of its instructions and yours before restarting. I now have Firefox in safe mode but can't open any Office apps. Once I've submitted this I shall need to restart the pc in normal mode to be able to do anything else.

When I pressed Post a reply I had an error message Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site. I found I wasn't connected, but have been able to use BT hotspot, so fingers crossed...

Most of these crashes is due to out of memory, or due to fragmentation of memory. Two crashes are made by Symantec Security Software.

more options

Are the memory issues due to keeping too many tabs open? And the fragmentation? Is there anything I can do please? Symantec I understand - it has a habit of over cautious interfering!

more options

Yes, keeping too many tabs can be connected. But crash is happening, when System Memory Use Percentage goes above 85 (check your crash reports). Having 2 GB of memory in this system is very troublesome.

What you can do for now, is to read Firefox's performance settings and lowering content process limit to 1.

more options

The content process limit is greyed out - I thought it might be because I was in safe mode so I restarted, but no difference. Also, should I leave hardware acceleration checked? Thanks for all this help!
