Refuses my e-mail passwords
When trying to add e-mail accounts Thunderbird does not accept the password, despite finding the account details on its database.

have you disabled email scanning in your anti virus? If you are using Nortons have you disabled SONAR.
Both can be required for the new account wizard to function correctly.
What mail providers. Some like Google require you to jump through hoops on their web site before a mail client can log in.
