Have tried to setup a att.net email account but when it gets to conforming password it will not. The sign on att.net site will take the user name and password letting me log in to site and get email. Will you please let me know what to do get it working. This has when going on for the last 3 days.

You should read AT&Ts instructions about having to use a secure key when using a 3rd party email client like Thunderbird.

What did you try, exactly?

AT&T does seem to send you in circles, but here's the deal: instead of using your regular password to connect to your mail servers in Thunderbird, you will use a new "key" they give you in its place.

The steps for getting the new key are in this article:

Create a Secure Mail Key (KM1240308)

Skip to the second section, titled "Create a secure mail key".

Then, in Thunderbird, edit your account settings and use that new key in place of your email account password (no change to your username, email address, or anything else).
