I noticed that on some web site forums where I participate using Firefox as my browser that extra carriage returns are inserted without any action from me other than pressing Enter at the end of a paragraph resulting in double spacing between paras. Investigation with the site admins revealed that other Firefox users are experience the same problem and describe it as "Irritating." I visited the relevant thread with Chrome as my browser and did not get the extra carriage returns. Chrome inserted only one carriage return on pressing Enter - no line spacing resulted - whereas Firefox inserted 2 carriage returns with a single press on the Enter key resulting in double lines inserted.

Can anyone help?

Is it a VBulletin site? Older VBulletin sites have an issue with a change that was made back in Firefox 60. To revert the change:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newline and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the editor.use_div_for_default_newlines preference to switch the value from true to false (was false in Firefox 57-59)

(This change was made for compatibility with Chrome, but if sites have been handling Firefox and Chrome differently, then those sites will have a broken behavior in Firefox. This article is for sites that need to adjust to the new behavior: https://www.fxsitecompat.com/en-CA/docs/2018/rich-text-editor-s-newline-behaviour-has-been-changed-now-generates-div-instead-of-br/ )

Was that it?

It works, no extra space! I'm running Firefox Quantum 68.0.2 (64-bit) and it's a keeper!
