Hi. Why do the bulk of my e mails only download after 9.30am? Before that time one or two come through. After that, I get about twenty to thirty. Why?

I suggest checking at your online account. Thunderbird has no capability to do that.

David thanks for this. You say its nothing to do with Thunderbird. My on line account provider says its nothing to do with them, so I'm stuffed!! Cheers Ian.

Ok, I suggest viewing online to check when messages arrive. There may be a server issue here.

David, thanks for this. Thunderbird says its nothing to do with them. TalkTalk says its nothing to do with them. Every time I open my emails, the usual response is "Thunderbird not responding." I think Its time I tried another provider!

Talktalk are a fairly terrible provider I agree.

With regard to Thunderbird not responding, have you created an exception in the antivirus for Thunderbird's profile folder? Lots of hang ups are caused by files being locked for scanning when Thunderbird is trying to use them. Something of a logjam situation as Thunderbird can not update it's own data files.

Generally we recommend exclusion of the profile folder from anti virus scanning. You might also want to use the clear cache button in the settings as sometimes caches can cause as much trouble as they fix. Clearing it may make displaying some IMAP mails or images slower as the items are initially fetched again to the cache, but long term it can only have beneficial results.
