Have a look at the New Tab Homepage or the My Homepage extensions. With My Homepage, if your homepage is set to a search engine, it will give focus to the homepage search bar instead of the address bar when opening a new tab. If you have any questions about installing extensions, Use extensions to add features to Firefox can help.
