I had to reload windows xp, before I reloaded windows I copied my profile and saved it. when I reinstalled Firefox I closed it from the file tab exit option. I replaced the new default profile with my old one. I cannot find "parent.lock in any folder. I also do not see Firefox.exe in the task manager. How do I stop Firefox?

Are you checking the "Processes" tab in the Windows Task Manager, as the "Applications" tab will not show what you are looking for.

file tab exit option is confusing, you meant File (menu) > Exit

yes I am checking the process tab as that is the way I normally close Firefox.
