I have Firefox set to automatically update & I recently got Firefox 16.0.1. This now is incompatible with Norton Toolbar 2013.1.0.32. This is a prevalent issue on the net. I think the incompatibility issue is a Norton issue but this toolbar worked in 16.0. Can anyone help me figure out how to install the update to firefox. I want to avoid having to uninstall firefox completely & then search for an earlier version of firefox to install

No it is not possible. But you don't have to worry Norton will send an update to correct there problem, in time. Updates are written into the code base. If you truly want to go back you have to remove and install. But there is always system restore. If you wait Norton will correct it.
