In the navigation toolbar address window there is a drop down arrow. Where you can manually type in a URL. When I click on this arrow I see several web sites that I have visited in the past but they never change. How can I delete those?

If you want to remove the data, see Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox

If the site has a gold star in the location bar, it will be a bookmark.

If you do not want it to display the drop down list, open the Preferences dialog, go to the Privacy panel and in the Location bar section at the bottom, change the setting for when using the location bar to suggest "Nothing", you can also limit it to only bookmarks or only history.
