Since upgrading to V8, some of the gadgets on my home page no longer work. Namely, (1) Google translate - which is handy for quickly translating single words; (2) French Word of the Day by Translate Language.

Both boxes are still displayed but there is nothing in them although I notice that French Word of the Day tries to load but then disappears.

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there.
A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)

  • You can open the Firefox 4.0+ SafeMode by holding the Shft key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or use the Help menu item, click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled... while Firefox is running.

Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.

If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.

Thanks for the information and I have tried this a couple of times but it makes no difference. I have even deleted and reloaded Word of the Day but still no luck.

Hi Cor-el,

Sorry to say that your solution didn't work either. Thanks anyway.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

I've just about exhausted every option and whilst Google Translate has come back, I still can't get Word of the Day but I've just been on their website and it appears that there are other people with this problem.

I'll wait and see if this is rectified but in the meantime, thanks for your help.

Regards.
