Above error gives two options, restart of exit. Upon trying again it doesn't show the previous profile. Though a profile is created in %APPDATA%/Roaming/Profiles (note not Roaming/Thunderbird/Profiles) It just contains 1 file - times.json Same results when trying to save the profile in non standard path

Windows 10 - 19044.1806 Thunderbird - 102.0.2 tried chocolatey and direct download.

Have tried 'fresh install' by removing thunderbird and deleting C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird %APPDATA%\Roaming/Profiles %APPDATA%\Roaming/Thunderbird %APPDATA%\Local\Thunderbird

Have tried launching thunderbird.exe -safe-mode with same result

A few questions 1) Is there any Thunderbird install cleaner for removing whatever I'm missing upon uninstall 2) Any more logging I can turn as message isn't very helpful. 3) Any know solution for this?

Feels like a permissions issue but it's clearly able to create that folder and 1 file.

Many thanks in advance

Did you download 'WINDOWS 64 bit' version of Thunderbird in prefered language from here:

Did you get the full download of 'Thunderbird Setup 102.0.2.exe' file in the User Account 'Downloads' folder? Size 53.5 MB

It might be worth switching off the Anti-Virus whilst you get the download and install, just in case it is causing a problem.

When you then click on the downloaded exe file to install, it should auto install here:

  • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird

or here depending upon whether you had a previous install in that location:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird

It should create a 'Thunderbird' folder in the 'Roaming' folder:

  • C:Users\User Account\Appdata\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\profile name folder

After install.

Switch AV back on. Access Firewall and set up Thunderbird as an allowed program.

Thanks for the reply

I'm not sure which version chocolatey uses but I got mine from the main page https://www.thunderbird.net/en-GB/download/ Which is 54866KB

AV isn't making any difference in this case. Nor firewall, both are disabled with same results

As previously mentioned it's not creating a Thunderbird folder in the Roaming, the profiles folder is %APPDATA%/Roaming/Profiles

I decided to remove the program installation by deleting my 'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder from C://Program Files(x86).

I went to this location: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/#E

I downloaded the English British 'WINDOWS 64bit' option to Downloads folder. The downloaded 'Thunderbird setup 102.0.2.exe' file had a size of : 54866KB When I tried to reinstall, it said the default location was: C://Program Files(x86) but it did not create the 'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder So deleted that installation and this time I selected 'Custom' and when it produced the C://Program Files(x86) as location, I edited it, so it said C://Program Files(x86)/Mozilla Thunderbird before clicking on install. This time it created the following: 'C://Program Files(x86)/Mozilla Thunderbird which contained the program itself including the thunderbird.exe' file.

I already had all my profiles set up, so it hooked up immedately to see them.

I removed the 'Thunderbird' folder from 'Roaming' - I removed the 'Thunderbird' folder from 'Local'

I went to C://Program Files(x86)/Mozilla Thunderbird and clicked on 'thunderbird.exe' and it opened asking to create a mail account.

Checked 'Roaming' and it now contains a 'Thunderbird' folder which contains necessary files including a 'Profiles' folder and a new default profile name. The 'Local' also has the appropriate 'Thunderbird folder with all the cache files.

Now I've just got to get all my original data back.

Thanks for the efforts here Toad-Hall, I really mean that.

But can I ask that you go back to the questions I asked please.

You're giving a lot of steps but not really focussing on the core error that's given.

It's totally possible that I'm not understanding your approach but I don't, for example, understand why you're trying to install 64bit software under Program Files (x86) path. It's clear that what you try will work for you because you're not getting this error in the first place.

That installation program installs in the correct places, without problems, without having to do the custom path i.e. C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird

Can we go back to question 2. Is there any more logging for this errors I can implement?

Or, question 1) Is there a cleaner for Thunderbird that's guarenteed to clear all folders, reg keys etc.
