I can easily log on to my Hotmail account. The password works, otherwise I wouldn't be able to log on to my Hotmail account using Firefox. I think your Hotmail password is only for web access. You may need an APP password that is explicitly for Thunderbird. This is not a Thunderbird shortcoming, but several major email providers now require separate passwords for each email client a person uses. If you do a websearch for hotmail app password, I think you will see several explaining this.
