Why? Old versions are available, but why go backwards?
The newer version doesn't work with an extension that I want to use.
Which add-on?
Firetray. Is there any other add-on that will give me the unread message count in a tray icon?
There is an addon which works with version 60 called 'Windows Taskbar Unread Badge'. This may be something you are looking for.
I updated to the latest ver. (60.2.1) but it says that 'Windows Taskbar Unread Badge' isn't supported! I read somewhere that there is a setting that allows Thunderbird to ignore the compatibility of add-on's but I don't remember what it was!
I'm running 60.2.1 and https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/unread-badge/ installed fine.
And https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/unread-badge/ indicates it is version 60 compatible.
But you are the second person today to report that Thunderbird complained it couldn't install an addon that should install without problem.
The other report is https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1235630
I installed ver 60.0 and "unread-badge" would install but didn't seem to work, (no notification in the tray) With ver 60.2.1, it just won't install, period. I have upgraded Win10 Pro to the October Update so that may be part of the problem, just don't know enough to figure this out! Thanks for the suggestions, guess I'll just live with it.
Does anyone know anything about a compatibility setting that can be changed to make Thunderbird ignore ver. information?

Thanks for giving lots of detail. But no, it's not related to windows update.
We have just disabled automatic updates so that users will stop getting 60.2.1 until we sort out the problem. Which is that some add-ons get disabled when Thunderbird is updated.
I can't speak to whether unread-badge works or not after it is installed - I've never used it.
Sorry for the inconvenience

Thanks for the response. I guess that was what I was asking for but I have no idea how to use that information! Is there a tutorial somewhere that would explain how to use that information?
Updates are turned back on.
And you should not need to hack the add-on - it should just install
Thanks to sfhowes for a solution that worked for me!
