select a range for archiving
I've been using Thunderbird for years... The archive functionality has evolved. I lost a lot of email messages left in my in-box when Norton AV decided to "lock" the inbox file when a virus signature was detected within my inbox full of messages. As a result, I got gun shy, and have left email to accumulate in my in-box, but now archving it is needed again. I have 8k plus messages and selecting those to be archived "on click at a time" is a PITA. There used to be a convention for selecting a range in a list which I suspect Thunderbird lists still follow, like Ctrl-Click does to keep the list open and add an item, but I can't remember it. HELP?

You use standard selection methods that have been around since the beginning of Windows. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2086566/the-many-ways-to-copy-move-or-delete-multiple-files.html
