original messages are being deleted when I reply to them
When I receive a message and then reply to it, the original message is disappears. I don't think it used to do this. When I search based on the subject, the results only show my replies in sent folder. Nothing in inbox, nothing in trash.
Any way to keep the original message in my inbox and the reply in my sent items?

christ1, thank you for your reply. View | Messages = doesn't exist on my menu View | Threads = all Anti-malware isn't an issue I have messages in Inbox with incorrect date and they don't disappear. Computer date is correct Search field is empty until I put in subject, then all relevant messages are displayed except the original messages are still missing. No corruption - don't have any other problems with any messages except the original message sent to me that I replied to is gone. I still have my reply, which includes the original message in the body, but that email is gone. I can sort by date and the message does not appear in any folder No empty folders Compacting works fine. Messages that have incorrect dates would still show up in a keyword search. I see new mail fine, no problems. I don't have any extensions or themes. I can read messages that I've searched for and that display in the search window I am online I have not deleted the original messages, but thought this was the issue. I figured there must be a checkbox somewhere that says "delete original message upon replying" but this does not seem to exist, plus the message is not in the trash, it is completely gone. Nothing in junk. I keep it clean. The only filters I have are to forward gamestop messages to my daughter, and those messages are in my Sent folder Retention Policies say "use account settings" and account settings say "don't delete any emails" Don't read any emails except in Thunderbird on my computer No "-1" files in profile folder Did not accidentally delete the account Did not rename folder Messages are not deleted, they no longer exist.
I am going to look again to see if I can find any settings that would cause the original message to permanently delete upon reply or forward.
Did you try to rebuild the index file for Inbox? See the link in the article 'Compacting does not seem to work'.
Did you check your anti-virus software for a quarantined or deleted Inbox file?
Did you compact folder on a regular basis prior to the incident, either manually, or automatically?
What is the size of your Inbox file now, and does the size match with the expected no. of messages in Inbox?
