Firefox set to erase data on close is forgetting extension logins when it didn't before

I had to reinstall Windows recently. For some reason, Firefox no longer seems to keep me logged in to Lastpass and Pushbullet. More than half of the time I load a new session, Lastpass will give me a cookies notice but does remember my details in the fields, whereas Pushbullet shoves a login screen in my face and I have to go through the hassle of signing in with Google.

My browser has always been set to erase everything on close, but this has never effected extensions, so I'm surprised it suddenly does so. I don't think my settings are any different than they have been previously. I've tried making the lastpass and pushbullet websites as exceptions and playing with various privacy settings but am unable to replicate the 'correct' behaviour I had before.

Am I missing something here please? Has something changed in recent versions of Firefox?

Settings are: Standard tracking protection Always do not track Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed is checked with Lastpass.com and Pushbullet.com as exceptions All options under 'Logins and passwords' unchecked Always use private browsing mode, remember browsing and download history, and remember search and form history are all unchecked Clear history when firefox closes is checked, and in settings, all boxes are checked

That one doesn't honor cookie exceptions, so as the starting point, uncheck Cookies there. Possibly also uncheck Offline Website Data.

Sorry, also: if you clear "Site Preferences" that clears exceptions, so uncheck that one for sure.

Thanks, didn't know that one! I took the "always clear when Firefox closes" off entirely and left "delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" on, and this seems to work. Lastpass stays logged in and Pushbullet isn't bugging me to sign in any more, thanks.

Still find it odd that my settings have been what I described in my original post for YEARS now and never had problems with extensions like I described, so I'm not sure why this has started now. Odd!

Detail like websites remembering you and log you in automatically is stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • create a cookie allow exception with the proper protocol (https:// or http://) to make a website remember you

You can check that you aren't clearing important cookies.

  • using "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" keeps cookies with an allow exception
  • using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear cookies clears all cookies including cookies with an allow exception you may want to keep
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exceptions for passwords and other website specific data
  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
    Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Exceptions/Permissions"
