Once again, Firefox is giving me it's home page on start up instead of my 'last windows and tabs' and is not remembering my previous history or user names and passwords, even though all are checked on my options.

Firefox 8 Lion 10.7.2 I too am not getting my default homepage. I now realize after reading your post it's Firefox that's causing all my user name and password problems on sites! This old lady thought it was a problem a with a new Mac, Lion, homepage (iGoogle). Some sites I've changed my password 4 times! I cringe at the thought but I might have to use Safari until this clears up.

Interesting that it's happening on Macs and Pcs (I'm using an ancient Dell laptop). I haven't had to change my passwords though - it just isn't remembering them. Curiousier and curiouser.

I'm finding that if I just quit Firefox then re-load, everything's fine. It's when I shut down or re-boot that it forgets everything.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history

  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

Use "Firefox/File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the title bar.

Make sure that you do not use Clear Recent History to clear the Browsing History when you close Firefox.

Thanks cor-el. Yeah, I've looked at Options and have everything checked except 'private browsing' and 'clear history'... I've experimented with setting a 'home page' and 'load these pages' (i.e. current pages) and it does those fine - it's just loading the last pages I was on before I last quit that it has trouble with. Can't think what I'm getting wrong here.

I am going to try out the Ubuntu operating system in preference to Windows, as I'm really getting interested in open source, so maybe it will work using that. Thanks again for replying.

Does it work if you use "Show my windows and tabs from last time" ?

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

No, I have that checked. It works if I quit Firefox then come back online but if I shut down or reboot my pc, it doesn't work, even though it remains checked in Options. It's like something else is overriding it though I can't think what.

Are you using virtualization software that restores files in the profile folder?

To be honest, I don't know what that means, but I've noticed that it's OK today. Last night's sites loaded as they should. Thanks very much for your input anyhow.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

You can do a Google search for your anti-virus software and virtualization to see if anything comes up.
I've seen mentioned ZoneAlarm Extreme and Avast as programs that have virtualization features that may cause problems.
