After upgrading to Windows 8 Pro, I've lost all of the FireFox bookmarks. Internet Explorer bookmarks are intact. How can I restore firebox bookmarks?

ok, so I found my backups. This is how I did it.

1. Make sure you can see hidden files/folders - In Explorer in Windows 8 click on view, then make sure 'Hidden Items' is ticked

2. Go go to: C:\Windows.old\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\c9i1rqwk.default\bookmarkbackups

3. I copied the most recent .json file from here to my desktop

4. Open Firefox then open the bookmarks library

5. Click on Import and Backup, then restore, then 'choose file'. Identify the .json file on your desktop.

That's what sorted me out. Hopefully it can help you.

Hi dualcycle,

I am sorry to hear that you lost your Firefox bookmarks after upgrading to Windows 8 Pro.

When did you notice that your Firefox bookmarks went missing?

Since your IE bookmarks are still intact, the easiest route may be for you to import them back into Firefox: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/import-bookmarks-internet-explorer?esab=a&s=import+bookmarks&r=1&as=s

If there are still bookmarks that you wish to recover, the following article may help you: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recover-lost-or-missing-bookmarks?esab=a&s=lost+bookmarks&r=0&as=s

I hope that this resolves your problem.

Please let us know, thanks!! :)

I think the reason why the bookmarks returned to the default setting is due to possibly a new profile. The upgrade process to Windows 8 moved FireFox to a Windows.old folder. When I browse to the Mozilla folder within the directory structure in Windows.old it treated as FireFox is a new install.

I've tried looking for places.sqlite, but it's a new file with default firefox bookmarks. Oh well, I think it might be gone forever!!

Didi you look in the bookmarkbackups folder to see if there is a JSON back with a file size that looks promising that it might have your bookmarks?

I also lost Firefox bookmarks when upgrading to Windows 8.

  • I don't have IE or Chrome bookmarks to import.
  • I checked the bookmarkbackups and all that was in there were bookmarks from after the upgrade, which was only the day before yesterday. (I understand the 10 backups are deleted as new ones are auto created.)
  • I tried finding the bookmarkbackups in Windows.old (according to gregoldridge's post) but could only get as far as <yourusername>. AppData wasn't there.

Any additional suggestions?

Hi andicarson,

AppData is usually a hidden folder, and your Windows 8 might be configured to not show hidden files and folders. I don't have a Windows 8 machine, so I don't know the steps, but here is an article that shows how to view hidden files and folders in Windows 8

In theory, you should be able to see your AppData folder after changing these settings. Please let us know how it goes.

Thanks!!

- Ralph

It worked! Yipee! You have no idea how happy I am!!! The trick was making the hidden folders visible so I could find what I needed. Thank-you, Ralph (and gregoldridge)! =)

(I remembered to rehide folders.)
