To begin, when I switched the playing screen size on YouTube, my keyboard volume buttons and shortcuts (like new tab) wouldn't work while using Firefox 22 and Flash 11.8. However, everything worked perfectly on IE 10. I found a solution online and downgraded my Flash to 10.3 (I tried going to 11.2 but Adobe's archived file wouldn't extract an installer). After downgrading, my volume buttons work, but I still can't use CTRL-T after clicking Play/Pause or changing the video size on YouTube. This problem also persists when watching videos on ESPN FC or Netflix. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this just a bug Mozilla has yet to fix?

Hi, its works fine for me with Adobe flash 11.8, could you try in safemode

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

To Enable SafeMode

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
  • Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

I can't see this happening, have you tried using safe mode? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Thanks for the tips on Safe Mode. I restarted in it, but the problem is still occurring. I have only used the default theme, and the only extension I've downloaded is the Omnibar. It's quite annoying cause I find Firefox fantastic besides this.

I created a new profile and the problem is still occurring. I also updated to Flash 11.8 and again the volume buttons and CTRL-T don't work on YouTube whereas only CTRL-T didn't work with Flash 10.3.

Hello,

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Thank you.

When you activate a plugin by interacting with it, Firefox then diverts most keyboard input to the plugin. Sometimes this seems to get stuck, and YouTube's player has been one of the stickier ones.

Generally speaking, if you click outside the Flash plugin area, then Firefox will resume intercepting your keystrokes and you can use Ctrl+t. Of course, this isn't much more convenient than clicking the + button on the tab bar to open a new tab.

Last year I posted these workarounds for problems with the Flash player intercepting scrolling keys:

(1) Full screen the video and then switch back

press f then Esc - focus will move back to the page

doesn't seem to work for Ctrl+t

(2) Switch to another application window and then back

press Alt+tab then Alt+tab - focus will move back to the page

doesn't seem to work for Ctrl+t

(3) Using the mouse...

click on a different tab then click back - focus will move back to the page

doesn't seem to work for Ctrl+t -- probably better just to click the + button on the tab bar to open a new tab
