in other words I thought firefox was asking for a new email address and password in order to synch. so the email address I thought I was making up might have belonged to someone and the link to synch was sent in an email to that person. could he synch then to my account at firefox and have access to my personal info such as banking, email, etc.?

Only if the email was verified by that user. You can login to the account and delete the account from the manage settings where you set up this account.

The certificate will expire in no longer than an hour and the verification email I think only lasts 24 hours. So if this is the case, no harm done. Just set up the account in the email you want and remove the account that has the wrong email .

Cheers!
